Menstrual Period, Sensations of Abdominal Cramps

In fact, the typical 28-day cycle regularly have only 10% of women. The others tend to have some variation of that pattern, and these variations are normal.

Menstrual cycle length is determined by the duration of the ovulatory phase. And the ovulatory phase in turn is determined by many internal factors (mood, activity, stress, etc.) and external (duration of daylight, etc). As you also have very heavy bleeding, most likely have a hormonal problem. But do not worry. Most of these problems are easily solved with the contraceptive pill.

Sensations of abdominal cramps that extend to the waist, hips and thighs, caused by uterine contractions that occur during menstruation. Also known as dysmenorrhea, and are common during the first two days of the menstrual period.

Primary dysmenorrhea. It is called so when there is a gynecological procedure that causes it, and it is harmless.

Secondary dysmenorrhea. Colic is the result of a gynecological disease, and benign tumor in the wall of uterus, cysts or endometriosis (abnormal growth of the lining of the uterus, whose evolution gives rise to bleeding).

Causes
* Uterine contractions caused by menstruation.
* The use of intrauterine device (device that is inserted into the vagina at a shallow depth to prevent pregnancy) can increase the pain when a muscle contracts the uterus.
* Benign tumors in the uterus wall.
* Cysts.
* Endometriosis (abnormal growth of the lining of the uterus).

Symptoms
* Begin shortly before or during menstruation.
* Cramps in the lower abdomen that can extend to the waist and thighs.
* Sometimes you have a headache, backache, nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea.
* Irritability, moodiness and sometimes mild depression.

Diagnosis
* According to the symptoms, the obstetrician will determine whether colic is a common or a condition that requires further attention.
* To detect the latter, should be considered if the colic is prolonged for more than two days and incapacitates the patient to perform normal activities. Before that event, the doctor will request further studies such as ultrasound.

Prevention
* A routine of moderate exercise helps to release muscle tension of the belly, hips and thighs.
* Using warm compresses on the belly.
* Rest.

Treatment
* Regular menstrual cramps relieved with nonprescription analgesics.
* When the pain lasts throughout the period and the above-mentioned drugs cause no effect, we must see a doctor to rule out that it is a cyst or tumor.

Consult your doctor.
