Edema Constipation
Water Retention Women
Are you a woman and suffering from water retention? Women who struggle with this condition, which is also known as edema, may have it somewhat harder than men. This is because individuals of both sexes can suffer from it equally – but men do not have to go through menopause or pregnancy, which are conditions that are frequently accompanied by edema, like women do.
Many menopausal women end up suffering from edema as a side effect of their condition. The variations in hormone levels that cause menopause can also bring about edema, as once estrogen and progesterone production is affected, so is the body’s level of water and salt. As a result of this, a menopausal woman can very well end up feeling bloated and “overstuffed” thanks to the excess salt, fluid and water that exists in her system.
Another condition specific to women is of course pregnancy. Pregnant women must deal with drastically differing levels of hormones in their bodies, in some cases on a daily basis. This is because they are taking care of two systems instead of just one – the mother’s, and the child’s to be. Excess progesterone and/or estrogen, and even male hormones like testosterone for women having male children, can affect blood salt levels and the overall levels of fluids in the body. So it is not a surprise that many pregnant women suffer from edema.
How can a woman tell if she is suffering from edema? A formal diagnosis should of course be left to a qualified medical professional, but there are certain ways to tell if one is edematous. Firstly, an edematous woman more often than not will have a heavy, bloated and ungainly feeling thanks to all the excess water in her system. Secondly, most often this water is pulled down to the lower legs – the ankles, feet, and so on – thanks to the effect of gravity. This can result in swollen, full ankles and feet. This in turn can result in unwillingness to walk or otherwise move around, which, as will be seen, is actually counter effective.
Women suffering from edema, whether pregnant or menopausal, need to be careful with taking just any medicine or remedy. These can interfere with existing medications for their condition. Also, a pregnant woman needs to be doubly careful about what she puts into her body, as she has to watch out for the welfare of her child. This is why exercise and eating a proper (low-salt or salt-free) diet are so important, most especially for pregnant women. It may be best not to take over-the-counter drugs to aid in this condition if one is pregnant or menopausal.
A word of caution here. It may be best to see a doctor if one suspects that one has edema. This is because edemas may have many causes, and not all of them are as potentially easily dealt with and/or self-resolving like these two causes. Some involve organ failure, as a matter of fact. So women should go to have themselves examined just in case
